How to install the SPIonic Greek font used on Monachos.net

Some of the documents on Monachos.net contain Greek text formatted with the freeware SPIonic Greek font from the now-defunct Scholars Press. This font allows accurate web-presentation qualities and cross-platform capabilities for displaying Greek text with the full range of classical accents and diacritical marks, and is used on other scholarly sites around the internet (e.g. the Perseus Project).

If you do not already have the SPIonic font installed on your system, you will need to download it before you can accurately view pages on this website that contain Greek text formatted in this way. If you attempt to view Greek text on Monachos.net without having the font installed on your system, you will be presented with a mixture of jumbled, illegible characters where formatted Greek text would otherwise occur (e.g. "eu)carist/w").

SPIonic is available in Apple and PC/Windows versions.

Download and Installation for Apple

To install the SPIonic font on your Apple system:

Step 1: Download the SPIonic.sit stuffed file to your desktop or any other download folder. (This file has been scanned for viruses using McAffee and found to be clean.) You may need to control-click on the link and select 'Save Target File...' from the pop-up menu, rather than simply click on the link, in order to save the file properly.

Step 2: Decompress the SPIonic.sit file with StuffIt™ Expander or another decompression utility. (Some newer browsers will automatically decompress stuffed files on download, in which case you can skip this step.)

Step 3: After decompression is complete, you will notice an SPIonic 'font suitcase' file in the same folder as the original .sit compressed file. Drag this font suitcase file onto your System Folder icon, where the MacOS will recognize it as a font and move it into the Fonts folder.

Installation is now complete. You may have to quit your web browser and re-launch it in order for the new font to be recognized. On some systems, you may need to restart your computer before the font will take effect in your browser.

Download and Installation for PC/Windows

To install the SPIonic font on your Windows system:

Step 1: Download the SPIONIC_.TTF TrueType font file to your desktop or any other download folder. (This file has been scanned for viruses using McAffee and found to be clean.) You may need to right-click on the link and select 'Save Target File...', rather than simply click the link, in order to save the file properly.

Step 2: Go to the Start menu, and select Control Panel to open your Control Panels window.

Step 3: Within the Control Panels window, you will see the Fonts icon. Drag the SPIONIC_.TTF file onto the Fonts icon to install the file into your system's font collection.

Installation is now complete. You may have to quit your web browser and re-launch it in order for the new font to be recognized. On some systems, you may need to shut down and restart your computer before the font will take effect in your browser.
