A monastery guest house.Numbers at which the guest-masters for the larger monasteries can be reached in order to reserve a room.

Most of the larger Athonite monasteries have only limited housing in their guest-quarters, and therefore can accept a limited number of pilgrims on a given night. Thus they ask that you phone in advance to 'reserve' a place in the guest-house at least a day before you wish to arrive at their monastery. It is a good idea to plan your route through Athos before you arrive, and phone the monasteries before you enter Athos in order to insure that you find place at your destinations.

Below are the phone contacts for the guest-masters of the larger monasteries and sketes on the Holy Mountain, as well as the hours in which they desire you ring for reservations (all times are Athos/Athens local):

  • The Skete of St Anne - 23320
  • Vatopedi - 23219 (10.00-16.00)
  • Iviron - 23643 (12.00-14.00)
  • Karakalou - 23225
  • Koultoumousiou - 23226
  • Xenophontos - 23249
  • Xiropotamou - 23251 (12.00-14.00)
  • Simonos Petras (Simonopetra) - 23254 (13.00-15.00)
  • Stavronitika - 23255 (13.00-15.00)
  • St Gregory - 23668 (11.00-13.00)
  • Pantokrator - 23253
  • New Skete - 23629

Other monasteries either did not have posted phone numbers or were not receiving visitors (for reasons of renovations) in March of 2000, when this list was received. You can check for a more up-to-date listing at any time by phoning the Mt Athos Pilgrim's Office in Thessaloniki, Greece (tel. 003+031-861-611, fax. 003+031-861-811).
