While the text of Adamantius is of an unknown date, it was popular in the fourth century and assumed by many to be by Origen. It was, as such, included in the Philokalia by St Basil and St Gregory - the volume of their preferred passages of Origen. Modern scholarship is, however, fairly unanimous in asserting that the text must be of a later date than Origen's.
The name 'Adamantius' is that of the main protagonist in what is essentially an anti-heretical dialogue between he and several 'Gnostics', a follower of Bar-Daisan, and multiple followers of Marcion.
