The ninth-century Alfred was a scholar and king who ruled from Winchester, working throughout his life to rule as a Christian prelate. He is noted for translating the writings of St Gregory the Dialogist of Rome, as well as those of St Boethius, into English; and also for his struggles against pagan rule in his lands, under the threat of invading forces from Scandinavia.
This brief prayer is a moving confession of God's power, and the devotion due him by all.
