Occasionally I read the word "material," such as in the term "material universe."  I am not certain how the Orthodox defines "material."  Is it:

1.)   The way current scientists view matter?

2.)   The way current scientists view matter and energy?

3.)   None of the above?

In the Creed, we confess that one God, the Father Almighty, created all things visible and invisible. The “material universe” refers to the visible creation—whatever we can apprehend using our senses, including through scientific instruments.

St. John of Damascus defines theology as “the consideration of incorporeal and immaterial things—first of all, of God, who is absolutely immaterial; and then of angels and souls.” He defines “physiology” as “the knowledge of the material things that are close at hand to us, such as animals, plants, stones, and the like.”

So angels are immaterial?

They are bodiless and invisible, but not immaterial in the absolute sense.

Indeed, angels, like the souls of departed holy people, communicate with those yet in this life with a 'bodiless voice' and by appearance in recognisable form.

Thank you.  That helps clear up some things with my thinking of angels and souls.
