These days, I wouldn't venture anywhere near that part of the world. Muslims should bear in mind that, according to the tradition preserved at the monastery, Muhammed personally granted it protection in perpetuity, this being ratified by Sultan Selim I in 1517.

Doing a Google search, if seems Warren may have been referring to closure during the egyptian uprisings awhile back. That was temporary. The monks were still there but they were obliged to close and stop taking guests and tourists.

Hello Warren,  Just thought I would share a book with you. A Cypriot profeesor from the University of Maine has written some great books and the latest, called Inner River..by Kyriacos Markides, discribes a journey he and his wife and a couple friends amde in 2009 to the Monastery of Saint Catherine. A good read but the chapter about the Monastery may answer some of your questions.

Thanks to all for the up-date.

With the rise of the many factions in the area, I just wanted to know what was going on.

Loucas:  I have the book and did read it.  Being it came out in '12 I thought that the news of late may be different.

Thanks to all.

There were some news yesterday that the monastery was attacked by beduins and they demanded tribute.

This 'news' has been proven false, and verifiably so through Fr Justin of the monastery. The bedouins are friends of the monastery, and if anyone would do such a thing, it certainly wouldn't truly be them.
