Many changes are taking place at the OCA Monastery of St John of Shanghai & San Francisco in Manton, CA. A handful of the long-time resident monks have moved to St Herman's in Platina, at least temporarily. There is a lot of floating speculation, with a few online comments from Fr. Martin, but I was hoping that this could be a hub for official information, or discussion of the issues at hand from a patristic/monastic/pastoral standpoint.
There is a yet-to-be Catechumen at my parish who was in discussion with Fr. Meletios, Fr. Martin, & Fr. Sebastian about entering the Novice Summer Program that they offer just weeks ago, and he hasn't been able to reach anybody lately. This is how we happened upon the record of events, unfortunately in a very unofficial manner which is always prone to speculation. During a visit yesterday to a nearby monastery, one of the parents of the affected long-time resident monks was able to share his prayerful sorrow for the situation, and without getting into speculative drama, strongly suggested that our friend not enter the program at this time.
Fr. Irenei, or any other parties potentially in the know, might you shed some light on the sad situation happening in Manton? What is the current status of the monastery?
