Please excuse this beginners question. I've done a number of searches and didn't come up with anything.
I've been Orthodox for a dozen years now and have used candles sparingly. Mainly because I have never seen or read anything that explained why we use them. I always heard people say that they would light a candle for someone and I assumed that a prayer would follow but not sure.
I listened to an AFR podcast the other day and the speaker said in passing "I went into the Church and lit a candle" and then did something else not related to the candle. It was like he was lighting the candle to announce his presence to be a part of the community to Worship.
I already know that Christ is the Light of the world, so you don't have to explain that. And, yes I should ask my priest, but I haven't.
So why do we or should we light a candle in Church?
