Red heifer and purification from death

are the cermony of purification from death by sprinkling the fresh water containing ashes of red heifer still present in JEWS now or terminated?

As I understand it, animal sacrifice ended with the destruction of the Temple in 70AD.

Some years ago there was a fuss kicked up because the first red heifer in centuries was born in Israel and people supposed it would be sacrificed to "recleanse" the ancient Temple grounds and signify the rebuilding of the Temple. Haven't heard anything more about it.
