Dear new Christian friends, I have been studying Church history and historical theology for over 45 years and would like to find a work that gives an overview of the various Christological debates, and the parties involved in these debates, from the earliest Adoptionist debates about the Synoptic-Logos Doctrine to the final major debates in the 7th century. Please do suggest a work for me. Also, please suggest a work that will give me the main Christological summation of each of the great councils up to the 7th century. Thank you very much, Debtor.

There are 2 books in three volumes which may meet your criteria.

The first is entitled Formation of Christian Theology, Vol. I: The Way to Nicaea by Dr. John Behr and address your concern with primitive Christology.

Your questions re: the Christological debates as addressed by the Seven Ecumenical Councils may find some resolution in his next two volumes in the series which are entitled Formation of Christian Theology, Vol. II : The Nicene Faith.

Dear Dr Pound, do not worry about that apparent confusion. The second 'name' was simply from your unregistered post made as a guest user before you joined the community more formally as a registered user. It showed up late because it required moderation and I was away at the time.

Welcome to this community and these discussions.

From Finland.

Being a now a retired Luth pastor and teacher, I was thrown this question about Jesus“ divinity and human nature (by a Jewish pastor from Jerusalem) and the study of Christology for the first time in dozens of years. I hope you can throw my way a graded course or titles where I can study so more on this especially the Eastern perspective.

Thank you,
David

Dear friends...before I jump into the articles that divided the Eastern & Western churches over the divinity/humanity of Jesus that have split the churches until the reconciliation of the 1990s, where there was an acceptance of the different emphasis each church has historical on Christ.

I have a favor to ask and this would especially help me to wade for the material.

Can anyone, give me a base, as working principle, that I can have in my mind, the emphasis or essence, that really separated the two churches throughout this controversy because then it would be alittle easier for me to understand what happened I would really appreciate it. Please use this message board to answer.

Blessings,
David.
