Does anyone know if the environmental views of Symeon the New Theologian have been explored in any systematic way? I would love to see a good book on them.

Re: St. Symeon - Environmental Study

There is a forthcoming book from St Vladimir's Seminary Press by Anestis Keselopoulos, entitled Man and the Environment: A Study of St Symeon the New Theologian (translated by Elizabeth Theokritoff). This sounds rather like what you're looking for!

As of yet, the book is not on the shelves. The Press assures me that its publication date is set for the last week of April or the first of May, 2001. You can pre-order it now, and it will ship on publication day: phone (USA) 1-800-204-2665. The price is £10.99 UK, or $13.95 US.

I look forward to this work as well. There is much to be explored in St. Symeon on the general environmental understandings of the Church.

Matthew

I've ordered this book, and in fact it just arrived today. So far I have only read the foreword and introduction, but that was more than enough to catch me! It looks like a fascinating text.

I have also just received this book, and am about a third of the way into it. Great reading so far, but very intensive! This author is definitely into his patristic terminology!

I really appreciate his discussion on the relationship of man and the world as an aspect of God's creative energies: man and the cosmos created to exist and grow together.

Dear Friends,
it is great to see on the net a group of colleagues interested in St. Symeon's heritage.
I am doing my research on Symeon's understanding of theology as expressed in his Theological Discourses and Hymn 21. The topic is really fascinating. However I need one book I have seen sofar only in references of other authors. Namely, by C. Tsirpanslis, "Trinitarian and Mystical Teaching of St. Symeon the new Theologian". It is very difficult to get. Does anybody have an idea how to get it?

Hello Star,

I've not seen this book in any general or light-academic stores. It's certainly available in the Bodleian at Oxford, but I don't know if that's of any use to you!

You might try contacting St Vladimir's Seminary Press in New York (find their link on www.svots.edu (http://www.svots.edu)), or St John of Krondstadt Press (search the web for their website, the address of which I do not recall off hand). Whether or not these houses will have the book in stock, they are quite knowledgeable and should be able to point you toward a book dealer that does.
