Dear in the Lord, Vladimir,

There is no 'set procedure' for becoming a monk on the Holy Mountain; it is a process that is different for each individual, as it must be, for the calling to the monastic vocation is different for each person.

The best thing to do is to make a pilgrimage to Athos and visit a few of the monasteries and sketes (there is documentation on how to arrange for a pilgrimage available here (http://monachos.net/monasticism/athos/visiting_athos.html)). While you are there, you may mention to the fathers your desire to follow the monastic life. The process from this point on will be determined by the guidance of the hegumen (abbot) or elder.

It is certainly best to get the blessing of your current spiritual father for this journey and task, before you begin.

Vladimir, do you know if the work on St Gregory Palamas by Metropolitan +AMFILOHIJE has been translated into English? I've not heard of it before, and would find it very interesting.

There are some resources available here for: St Symeon the New Theologian (http://www.monachos.net/patristics/symeon_divine_light.html), St Maximos the Confessor (http://www.monachos.net/patristics/maximus_freewill.html) and St Gregory Palamas (http://www.monachos.net/patristics/palamas_theology.html); click the links to be taken there in a new window. More are available in the Patristics Area.

st Nilus the Myrrbearer of Mt Athos is different from the russian hermit st Nilus of Sora.
he lived from 1600-1651 .Τhe myrrh from his relics has formed a rill, from the grave to the sea .
his feast is on November 12th and his relics finding on May 7th.
There is a prophecy about the last days under his name.
