View Full Version : Finding texts by Basil and Symeon on the environment

I am so happy to see the new texts online by St. Basil the Great! His works are comparable to those of St. Symeon the New Theologian in terms of providing an outlook on creation capable of fostering a truly Orthodox attitude toward the environment.
Does anyone know where online I can find the texts of homilies 2-4, and 6-8? I would like to trace his discussion of the days of creation all the way through.
with peace in Christ,

Re: Further texts by St Basil the Great
You can find the online texts of the homilies you requested, as well as several additional letters by St Basil, at the CCEL Early Church Fathers site:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/NPNF2-08/TOC.htm
Additionally, further texts by St Basil are available online through the Pachomius Project, at:
http://www.ocf.org/OrthodoxPage/reading/St.Pachomius/globalindex.html#B
(Both of the above links will open a new browser window.)
I hope this helps.

Who can advise me where can I get on-line GREEK texts of St. Symeon the New Theologian's 'Theological Discourses" and the Hymn 21 ? Is it at all possible? Also I am looking for the English texts of the Theological Discourses and Hymn 21.

Hello Star,
I am not aware of any website that provides online Greek versions of the texts you've mentioned: most are in translation, either into English or another major, modern language.
(Mind you, this does not necessarily mean that such materials are not, in fact, available online, just that I have not yet come across them.)
However, if you're willing to spend a small amount of money, you could look into purchasing the Logos Software Church Fathers collection, which I believe offers the texts of St Symeon in the original Greek -- though I should again assert that I am not certain of this; it is possible that this late Eastern Father lies outside the scope of that digital project.
Another option would be to find a copy of Migne's Patrologia Graeca on CD, which contains all the Greek texts of the Fathers in the original Greek. However, this route will most likely be one worked out through a public or university library, as the CD-ROM edition of PG is quite pricy.
Do keep us informed if you manage to find the texts online -- I would be quite interested to see them myself.

Matthew

Dear everyone,
This is my first time using these message boards, so hello to all the "regulars."
After reading a bunch of the materials on St. Basil the Great from monachos.net and other websites, I have a really strange question: is St. Basil's title "the Great" meant to set him apart from another St. Basil? I think there probably isn't a "St. Basil the Not So Great", but is his name meant to compare him to someone else? I have only ever heard of this St. Basil.

I know there is at least one other St. Basil: St. Basil of Ancyra, whose memory was just celebrated in the church a little while ago. It kind of surprised me, because I always thought Basil of Ancyra was the founder of the homoiousion group which taught heresy?

I'm not really sure how many there were, but a number of Basil's were prominent enough that they have a place in the Church Calendar (http://www.cygnus.uwa.edu.au/~jgrapsas/pages/calendar2002.htm). I think that Basil of Ancyra was indeed main voice behind the semi-arian (homoiousion) formula, but he is also in the calendar and considered a Saint in the Orthodox Church.

Can anyone please tell me what texts of St. Gregory Palamas have been translated into English, what of these are available online, and which works have yet to be translated?

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!
Jordan, I don't have time at the moment to answer your question fully, = but I did want to let you (and the list) know that the homilies of St = Gregory Palamas are being published by St Tikhon's Seminary Press in = three volumes (hardcover), the first due to be released very soon. My = patristics prof., Dr. Christopher Veniamian, has been translating and = editing the homilies for publication, with extensive footnotes, etc., = and they promise to be a wonderful addition to St Gregory's corpus in = english.

Dear John,
Do you know the (expected) dates of the publication of these volumes? We will expectently await the full set.
Are you aware of the source editions that Dr Veniamian is using for his translations? I might assume the critical editions of P.K. Christou, though it may well depend on the precise texts being addressed.

Christ is Risen!
Matthew,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you on your question, but I = have not had a chance to talk to Dr Veniamin about it. Finally I got to = look at Volume I myself, which just arrived from the printers on Friday. = The translation is made from Chrestou's edition, and contains the first = 21 homilies of St Gregory Palamas. They are charging $35 for the volume, = but it is a very nicely bound hardback volume with in depth notes and = very complete indices.
John
