Hello,

I don't know whether this is the right place to put this question. But however, I put it anyway.

Does the Orthodoxy regard the dispute on the "filioque" with the Catholic Church as being solved or not?

Best wishes,

Thinh

Thinh,
I believe that it is seen as not solved. At least as far as the Orthodox Church is concerned. It never has been nor ever will be a part of the Creed as approved by an eccumenical council.

Thinh... what do you mean by "solved?"

I think the only way this issue can be "solved" is if both the Orthodox and Catholic Church learn to humble themselves, and allow the Spirit Itself to work through this problem. The way i see it, the schism only occured because of political reasons, not "real" theological ones.

The filioque understood properly in its context is not a "heresy" as such. The crux of the problem with the filioque just boils down to semantics i believe. The expression "Proceeds from the Father and the Son", is, when placed in its latin context simply equivalent to the Greek expression "Proceeds from the Father and through the Son", as i understand it. The greek word for 'proceed' has two equivalents in the latin, the first one implies procession from an origin, the other implies exactly what the expression "through the Son" implies.

The fact the Spirit goes from the Father and through the Son, does in fact imply the Spirit must somehow proceed from the Son to go through it in the first place, yet it doesnt have its origin in The Son's person, but rather the Fathers'.

I hope someone can correct me if im wrong.

Only if you are speaking of the divine economy. Have you ever read The Mystagogy of the Holy Spirit by St. Photius?

If you want a really good explaination of the Orthodox theologican objections to the 'filioque',or for anything related to Orthodox theology, I would highly recommend the works of Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos of Nafpaktos, whose website is www.pelagia.org (http://www.pelagia.org); or the works of Fr. John Romanides, whose website is www.romanity.org (http://www.romanity.org)
