Some of you have already noticed, some certainly not, that our new spell checker went on-line yesterday. Whereas the old spell checker simply highlighted words it thought were spelt wrongly (with an amazing flare for simply highlighting everything), the new version is a proper spell checker: when you click the Spell Check button at the bottom of a composition window (next to the Submit and Preview buttons), a new window opens containing a word-processor-like spell checker. Incorrect words are highlighted, and suggestions made for replacements. The system even has a 'learn' function, so that you can train it to recognise new terms (you must have cookies enabled in your browser to support this feature). Once the spell check is complete, you are returned to the composition window with the corrected text in place, and you can then click the usual Preview Post button to see a preview before posting, or Submit button to post your message directly to the system without preview.

The new spell checker seems to work remarkably well in the tests I've given it, though regrettably it no longer insists that 'Canada' is a misspelling, thus bringing to a close the implicit Canada-bashing that's been part of the loving atmosphere of the Community for years.

I'm not sure what we people from the North will do without such persecution. :(
Now let's see how's the spell checker reacts to the word Winnipeg.

Have a most glorious Pascha everyone!

Dear all,

This is advance notice that the Discussion Community's spell checker will be going off-line for a time, so that I can try to fix whatever issues are burdening it at the moment. It will go back on-line eventually: fear not. But in the meantime, I imagine we shall all enjoy the period of enforced brutal honesty about our spelling abilities that its absence will make painfully clear.

Hi Fr. Dcn,

I realize it has been about 3 years since this notice. Just wondering if the bugs have been worked out or if I am having new bugs. When I click the Spell Check box, I get an 'error on page' notice in the lower left corner where the word "done" always is with a black on yellow exclamation mark.

Thanks
Paul
