Dear friends in Christ,
I will be traveling to New York in September and am interested in visiting a monastery. I am a former Catholic and am studying and attending a church of the Antiochian Diocese where, God willing, I will be received. I wanted to know if anyone could recommend a monastery? A friend of mine who is Catholic will be with me so I have to take that into consideration. She is very open and is also interested in Orthodoxy. Because both of us are not yet Orthodox, I was wondering if they receive catechumens as guests and allow them to participate in the Services.
I have checked out the website that list Orthodox monasteries worldwide but would like some firsthand information. (Also, we will not be flying into Manhatten and we won't be going there so we are interested in someplace in the rural areas of the state.)
Thanks for your help. Blessings to all.
Marie

You will probably want to consider Holy Trinity Monstery in Jordanville NY. It's pretty much rural upstate NY. Its not far from Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame). Since it is pretty much a Russian enclave, many people will assume you speak Russian, but almost everybody can switch to English with the first puzzled look. The daily services are (iirc) pretty much in Slavonic - however I think that they do have a regular schedule of English services, esp on the weekends. Here is the contact info:

This is a very cordial monastery for women located south of Jordanville and also near Cooperstown. It is in Otego which is also very rural and fairly close to Otsego so even if the guest house is filled up you can stay in town at night and monastery all day. They have a website you can go to for further infomation.
They are a stavropigial community of the Orthodox Church in America. Divine services are in English and some of the sisters including Mother Raphaela are converts. I am certain you would find them very welcoming and happy to introduce you to Orthodox life.

There is a Greek Monastery that follows that Athonite Typicon, Saint Nectarius (Nektarios) Greek Orthodox Monastery. Founded by the Very Reverend Elder Ephraim of Philotheou, and the Abbot there is Elder Archimandrite Father Joseph. Who also is from Philotheou.
