Good evening, everyone!

Why is there a particular emphasis on being silent during Shestopsalmie/The Six Psalms (i was taught not to even move during that part of the service)? Is it because of the prayers the priest is reading at that moment?

Dear Vera,

According to what I have been taught, there is a tradition that says the Six Psalms read at Orthros will be read by our guardian angel at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Consequently, we should stand silent and without movement at Orthros (during this particular part) as though we are standing before the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Along with this explanation it should be remembered that this was and in some places is still part of a real Vigil service which begins as the sun sets, moves into the darkness of night, and then culiminates in the rising of the sun. Much of the significance of the Vespers/Matins at Vigil refers to this.

Seen in thsi way the Six Psalms are read in darkness and silence as a kind of preparation for the light which follows at the Polyeley & Gospel reading.
