The Creed states "And rose the third day according to the Scriptures."

Would this not be better stated "And rose the third day in accordance with the scriptures" ?

"according to the Scriptures" sounds like "as reported by the Scriptures" - "in accordance with" sounds more like "in agreement with the Scriptures"

Maybe I am misunderstanding what the creed is saying? Is it not stating that Christ fulfilled prophecy by rising on the third day?

I always understood it as confirming what the scriptures had predicted.

The phrase in Greek is:


Καί αναστάντα τή τρίτη ημέρα κατά τάς Γραφάς.

This can really be translated both ways: 'according to' and 'in accordance with'.
