Hello friends,

I would be grateful if any members could point me to the direction of
the Vespers service hymns (Byzantine style ) in western notation. Is there a particular publication available? Any information will be of great assistance to a relatively small, young and eager choir :)

Many thanks,

Kyra

Hi Kyra. You might try contacting Fr Ephrem's monastery in Arizona. They're working on a large project to provide Byzantine style chant music for the services in western notation..... I'm sure you can find many parts of Vespers (maybe even all of it there).

Thank you Tim . . . I have just visited the site and was amased to find such a wealth and treasure of Byzantine music. I am still in awe over what has been achieved ! The vespers service appears to be a fairly recent addition. After trying to download the enormous file, I thought it would be better to purchase the entire CD available for sale from the Monastery. It seems only fair after such an amasing effort on the behalf of the Fathers and Brothers involved.

Thanks once again for your help.

Best wishes in Christ,

Kyra

Dear Kyra,
you can also try to get ahold of some of the publications from Holy Transfiguration Monastery. I like some of their material alot. Fr. Ephrem's efforts are astounding, I agree. Much of his music, though is beyond the "beginner" level and HTM tends to have byz chant that is sometimes (not always) a bit simplified -- easier on beginners.

Dear Kyra,
I agree with Macrina about the difficulty of some of Fr. Ephraim's versions. I have fairly simple Byzantine versions of the Sunday Apolytikia and Theotokia plus O Gladsome Light. The texts and some of the music are from OCA sources. If you would like any or all of these, please send me an e-mail. I could send them to you as .pdf files.

Kyra, You might try Fr George Robinson of St Stephan of Perms Mission in Queanbeyan in NSW. He has a simple singable Vespers service. His email is ststephans@yahoo.com

Hi Kyra,

I'm not sure if this is Byzantine, but it's pretty close. Here is a link I found from Holy Cross Hermitage, they have a great online kliros.

Enjoy:
