References to the Divine Light

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for these questions, but here goes...

I am looking for textual references to Orthodox saints of the first millenium who were granted the experience of the Divine Light. My questions are,

1. Apart from Scripture, what is the earliest discussion of this experience in Patristic sources and/or in lives of saints?

2. Which Orthodox saints in the west (i.e., before the east-west schism) are referred to as having had this experience?
