Nice try, John, but polytonic Greek is difficult, if not impossible, to transplant into an email message. I learnt that years ago.

I see all the accents OK.

I find the browsers on most machines I use are pretty selective about which scripts they support. Here's to more consistent Unicode support, for the benefit of all Orthodox languages*. (The original test in this thread, most of which I later deleted, found Georgian coming out OK but not, for example, Amharic.)

* shorthand, of course, for "languages traditionally in common use in Orthodox countries and cultures".

The REAL test would be to post Church Slavonic successfully - using a true Old Slavonic font (such as Irmologion and Orthodox) with all the accents and abbreviations, not the copycat Cyrillic fonts dressed up to look like the real thing. :D

Probably a matter of installed fonts on the viewer's computer.

The forum stylesheet is set up to use the following fonts, in order:

verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif

I know on my machine sans-serif will show the accents, but verdana, lucida and arial don't. Since verdana is the first choice, I don't see the accents.

I have to say that John's accented Greek appears just fine on my browser (being IE 6, and IE7, as well as Firefox 2.2).

While messing around I have noticed that the Unicode chart for Cyrillic seems to lack the "I-A ligature" (as distinct from ѧ, or modern Russian Я). This seems weird, and I have presumably made a mistake somewhere. Unfortunately my browser doesn't have all the right fonts, and I would be grateful if anybody could help out.

To answer my own ignorant question, it seems that unicode identifies the I-A ligature with the modern Cyrillic я.

Sorry to continue the monologue, but I contacted the Unicode Consortium about this, and have found out that a proposal to change this (N3194R if anybody's interested - it includes some other recommendations as well) has already been "accepted for encoding and processed". The new I-A ligature is called the IOTIFIED A and is encoded at A656 and A657 (capital and small). In decimal that is 42582 and 42583.
