Is there a Church tradition of Jesus being left-handed?

A rather odd question.

I would say he was right handed for two reasons.

1) The sheep He loves will be separated on his right. The goats He hates will be to his left. I would think he would show preferential treatment if he were.

2) If ever there is an icon of him giving a blessing, it is with his right hand.

But, being GOD, he was probably Ambidextrous. Besides, what limits could be placed on Him?

I must say, being left-handed myself I LIKE the idea...but where would such a tradition come from? I certainly have never heard anything like this in the Orthodox Church and as Paul says, what we do know indicates otherwise.

The left side is the "sinister" side according to many cultures, the right side is "dexter" (from whence we get the word dexterity which is supposed to be a good thing), it is the place of honor.

Of course, if you believe PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) our Lord was a vegan. People try to make our Lord be a lot of things, the Jews wanted Him to be an avenging fighter. We have the revolutionary Jesus of the 70s (for those of us who can remember back that far).

But I have never heard, until now, that He was left-handed.

(Giggle Smiley) Paul, please tell Leah that her husband has a great sense of humor and is witty also! I never thought of that but your entire post makes very much sense to me. :)

This is the most hilariousest website I've ever seen! Thank you Peter! I should send it to all my left handed friends.

In India - all left handed kids are forced to become right handed because the left hand is 'dirty'.

Dear Mary--

I am really sorry to be such a prude here; but, I must share with you that your grammar is very poor in the above post :) Because, "hilariousest" is not even a real word. I think you possibly meant "hilariousestes!" This would be similar to the grammatical rule for the word "tasteses," as in spaghetti and meatballs tasteses good. You see the one thought unit at play here I'm sure. Another similar example would be that of the game of hockey. As we had to inform a Canadian student one day in class some years ago, when he stood up, right after class had begun, and announced that the Canadians had won the Olympics in the sport of hockey! . After he made this very proud declaration, while his eyes were still beaming with glee and pride, he was informed by the class jester that what he had just said was hilariousestes . . . and he was promptly rebuked in the usual Louisville way and informed that it was not that big of a deal really, because hockey is not even a real sport! I can still remember the look of shock on his face when he said, looking back, from the front of the classroom, "what do you mean it's not even a real sport?" To which it was explained to him that, "there's no ball so its not a real sport!) Hopefully, you are not as disappointed now, as he then, as you find out that hilariousest is not a real word :)

Truly, with no disrespect to anyone who seems to think that Jesus was left-handed, let me just say that I think that Jesus was ambidextrous! (using both hands with ease, in prayer, in service and healing, in pointing out what needed to be said, in blessing, and in the opening of His arms and hands to you and me, in forgiveness, mercy, love and compassion.)

Why do I think that? Jesus presented both his hands to those who accosted Him the Garden of Olives; both hands are tied when He is presented to Pilate, as depicted in the Bridegroom ikon; and, both His hands were attached to the Cross with nails!

When He appeared to the Apostles, to Thomas, He said, "See my hands, put your fingers into the wounds of my hands, and into my side; touch and see that I am He!"

So, who really knows about the left-handedness of Jesus?

Peace!

In this line of thinking, Christ thought just the opposite.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

So maybe there is a case for lefties afterall.

I still think He was ambedextrious

LOLesest!

And by whose authority are you grammar police on Monachos? If you haven't been annointed by ambidextrouses hands, "hilariousest" is definitely a word! =) On the other hand (left hand, if you're right handed, right hand if you're left handed, right and left foots if you're ambidextrous...), if you've been annointed by ambiguous hands, "hilariousesest" isn't a word...

Ok. Time to quit being silly.

I wish I could be anonymous when I post such silly posts, but I'm not allowed, so in forced humilitiestesness, I take full responsibility for all my foolishy wordses.

Mary (annointed by the right hand of a left handed priest - which could explain why I'm so muddled...)

A colleague of mine was left handed but went to a Catholic school where the nuns basically forced him to use his right hand. He felt much vindicated when I was able to inform him that in the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra on Mt Athos, they have among their precious relics the incorrupt "left" hand of St Mary Magdalan. Not only is the flesh of her hand soft and supple, but it also maintains body temperature.

I have been blessed to venerate the same.

I didt know about this relics being thwere. When were you there, John?I got to visit Simonopetra about four years ago after spending two days at Philothei. Something to remember when walking from one monastery to another is that the day begins at sunset. Monasteries on the Western side of the peninsula get to watch the sun go right down to the horizon while those on the Eastern side have the sun disappear behind the ridge a good couple of hours earlier. Keep it in mind if you expect to arrive at another monastery in time for trapeza :)

John, great to see you here. I have just discovered that you have been back for a while even though your above post was the first one I read. Reading your older posts I saw that Adonis has indeed become a monk, as he wanted. Δοξα σοι ο Θεος.

Hi Effie,
nice to see you too :) . Sorry we weren't able to get in touch. On our move back to Australia we lost our precious address book. We still have many people we haven't been able to contact and it has been two years and two days since we moved back to Oz

I was on holiday there recently and came back on the 10th of December. A beautiful, beautiful country - you are so lucky. For me, Australia is not an option, because my husband's health is and always has been my first priority, but that doesn't stop me from being nostalgic.

I'll send you a private message, so that we can communicate.

Best wishes to your wife and lovely daughters.
