Other than St. John Chrysostom, is anyone aware of patristic commentary on Galatians?

Thanks

Max Percy

Dr. Peter Head at Tyndale maintains a page specifically on Patristic and Reformation Commentary on Galatians (http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/Tyndale/staff/Head/Gal_Patr._Bibl..htm) to accompany his lecture series "The History of the Interpretation of the Apostle Paul". I saw references to Tertullian, Origen, Jerome, Pelagius, Theodore of Mopsuestia, and Augustine (after that his list jumps all the way to Aquinas). It's just references, not texts or links.

Tertullian made some exposition on Galatians in Book V, Chapter 2 (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03.v.iv.vi.ii.html) of his work "Against Marcion" (link is to online text at CCEL); that book also includes commentary on other Pauline epistles, all directed of course towards refuting Marcion's errors, instead of being comprehensive commentaries.

Augustine's Commentary on Galatians (http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/ReligionTheology/HistoryofChristianity/EarlyChurch/?view=usa&ci=9780199297092&view=usa) was just published last year by Oxford Univ. Press; since their blurb says "Now available in English for the first time" I doubt you'll find it online (link goes to OUP listing).

Book VIII (http://www.amazon.com/Testament-Galatians-Ephesians-Philippians-Commentary/dp/0830814930) of the series "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture" provides excerpts from various patristic commentators on each verse of Galatians, Ephesians, and Philippians (link goes to Amazon.com listing).

Finally, the EarlyChristianWritings.com website has a page for what they call the e-Catena (http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/e-catena/), in their words "the most comprehensive collection of allusions from the Ante-Nicene Fathers to the New Testament texts." You click on a given chapter number and get a page with all references by the Ante-Nicene Fathers to each verse (with links to the text of that work at CCEL). It was compiled using an automated program to search the public-domain edition of The Ante-Nicene Fathers, and they admit there are errors in the results. Plus, even if correct a given reference may just be quotation, not commentary.

There may be more out there, but that's all I could find in a quick search.

Dear Mr. Percy,

I have found this volume most helpful:
Edwards, Mark J., ed. Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Volume
VIII: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians. Downer's Grove, IL: Intervarsity
Press. Further details at http://www.orthodoxpress.org/catalog/comment.htm or http://www.amazon.com/Testament-Galatians-Ephesians-Philippians-Commentary/dp/0830814930

There is much from St. Jerome, St. Augustine and Origen.

I hope that helps.

In Christ,

John

Dear Mike and John

Thanks for these suggestions. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I was away on vacation and did not touch a computer. Thanks again so much.

St Bede who was a famous church historian and theologian from England wrote commentaries on this. I am guessing St Ambrose did but I am guessing as he wrote many commentaries.

maybe something can be found on www.ccel.org (http://www.ccel.org) ?
