Can someone please explain to me what a cell attendant is and what function they serve? Are they kind of like a secular personal assistant? Do they reside with the elder they are tending to?

As I understand it, a cell attendant is a monk who serves the Superior or other senior members of a monastery. The cell attendant may be a novice, young monk or an older schemamonk. At Essex, senior novices serve as cell attendants to such as Fr Symeon and Fr Zacharias. They keep rooms tidy, look after and prepare vestments, and generally attend to the needs of the one they serve. In the life of St Theophan the Recluse, we read of the saint's devoted cell attendant, Evlampy.
