Does anyone know of a St. Justin icon? I have only found two on the entire internet, and they both look completely different from one another. He will be the patron saint I take when I am chrismated, God willing, since my name is Justin. However, I can't find much about him other than some of his works which I know of (and some are disputed), and those 2 radically differing icons.

So... is there a St. Justin Martyr icon out there? Is there uniform "rule" for a St. Justin icon (especially since the 2 I have seen are different)?

Thanks!

INXC,
Justin

A monk from Athos that has as patron saint St. Justin the Aeropagitis (Philosopher, Martyr) has this icon:

Hello Justin

The common portrayal of St Justin is of a man with dark hair and a short, rounded, but full beard. He is dressed in robes suggesting noble ancestry, and he holds a martyr's cross in his right hand. from memory, I have at least three such icons of this saint on file. Such a depiction fits with what is written in this saint's life.

I suspect the icon you saw which was "different" shows him with white or grey hair, a long, tapered beard, and plain robes, and he is holding a crown, signifying martyrdom. Honourable attempt, but falls a little short of the mark. Martyr-saints are always shown holding crosses, not crowns.

Where a crown (not including the crowns on the heads of saints of royal ancestry) appears as a motif in icons, it is most commonly held by an angel over the head of the saint. In some icons of groups of martyrs (such as the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste), one or more rows of crowns are painted in the uppermost section of the icon, as if they are floating high above the saints.

There are a couple of icons out there at online stores:

Come and See Icons (http://www.comeandseeicons.com/j/inp63.htm)
Archangels Books (http://www.archangelsbooks.com/proddetail.asp?prod=HTM%2DA80) (If you're interested in other Justins, they also have an icon of St. Justin Popovich (http://www.archangelsbooks.com/proddetail.asp?prod=UMS%2DSJP10)).
Holy Transfiguration Monastery (http://www.thehtm.org/mounted.htm) carries the same icon as Archangels.

These two are different both from the one on the OCA site (http://ocafs.oca.org/Icons/june/0601justinmartyr.jpg) (the one Olga mentioned as the "different" one - white/grey hair, crown) and from the one Nina linked.

Justin Popvich is a saint? If so, I need to consider him. :)

You are blessed because both St. Justin the Philosopher and St. Justin Popovich are amazing pillars of Orthodoxy. You can choose the second and since he was named after the Philosopher Saint (I think) honor the first one too. I do not know why, but I know only wonderful people with this name. :) You are really blessed.

I have yet to be chrismated, so do not have an official patron but I will take a Justin to honor my mother (plus she hates Orthodoxy, so :p). I pray to St. Justin Martyr and St. Seraphim of Sarov and to St. Kevin of Glendalough. I will begin praying to St. Justin Popovich also. If he is named after St. Justin Martyr, it would be an excellent way to honor both saints.

Thank you for the compliment, Nina! Everyone always tells me that, to which I am sometimes baffled. :D

Justin feel free not to answer this, but do you not have the blessing of your parents to get chrismated? It is not a criteria of course, but just wondering why she hates Orthodoxy so.

No. She hates Orthodoxy with a passion. She despises but tolerates my icon corner in my room. All my family is Baptist, but we (mom and I) don't really go to church so I am able to tell her I am walking on the bike trail and sneak to church instead.

Wow! Justin if you continue in this way to show love for God, you will be so great in Heaven.

Be careful. When you are able to get advise from your priest ask him about honoring your father and mother while at the same time choosing the better part which is Christ. The only time we are to go agianst our parents is when they go against God or try to get us to. Get better advise on this than from me though. Perhaps if you can't talk to your priest about this, you can PM one of the fathers here?

Baptists are the hardest nut to crack. All 2300 varities of them. Nothing against your parents personally, i just know where they are coming from. There used to be a link on the Antiochian site where converts could ask other converted convets about their transition. But I can't seem to find it anymore since they changed their website up.

My family grew up mostly Baptist. I have the hardest time talking to them about Faith. So I just don't. But I am out of the house too so i can live as i do. Many Saints of old when desiring to leave their parents to go the monastic route, were asked by their parents not to abandon them until they died. Once their estate was settled though he high-tailed it to the monastery.

That's interesting.

My SF said it was fine. I've asked him several times, because I sometimes feel bad about sneaking to church.

I didn't know, btw, that St. Justin Popovich was canonized. That's really good to hear, I will have to research him some more. :)

I see why you like him so much. He was a true man of God (http://chattablogs.com/hagioipateres/archives/cat_st_justin_popovich.html). and another link (http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/ecumenism/eulogy.aspx)about his incredible life.

It seems Google has a plethora of sites dedicated to him or about him. You made a good choice.
