View Full Version : Troparion for saints of Alaska

I have seen several "group" icons of Alaskan saints (typically Ss Herman, Juvenal Peter and Innocent), and was wondering if they have a joint troparion, besides their individual troparia. If so, perhaps somebody would be kind enough to post the text.

Troparion (Tone 5) to the Saints of North America:
Rejoice, O continent of North America,
illumined by the Holy Gospel.
Rejoice, every province, state, city, and town,
which raised up citizens of the heavenly Kingdom.
Rejoice, our venerable Father Herman, first Saint of our land.
Rejoice, O Martyrs Juvenal and Peter,
for your blood has watered the seed of faith planted in Alaska.
Rejoice, O holy Hierarchs: Innocent, Tikhon and Nicholas,
Rejoice, O holy Father Alexis and you righteous priests,
Rejoice, All Saints of North America,
for your light has shone forth to the ends of the earth.
We beseech you to pray to Christ our God that our souls may be saved.
Wow that's beautiful! Thank you Herman!

The OCA site also lists a shorter Troparion, along with a Kontakion, for the commemoration of the Synaxis of the Saints of North America (second Sunday after Pentecost):
Troparion - Tone 8
As the bountiful harvest of Your sowing of salvation,
The lands of North America offer to You, O Lord, all the saints who have shone in them.
By their prayers keep the Church and our land in abiding peace
Through the Theotokos, O most Merciful One.
Kontakion - Tone 3
Today the choir of Saints who were pleasing to God in the lands of North America
Now stands before us in the Church and invisibly prays to God for us.
With them the angels glorify Him,
And all the saints of the Church of Christ keep festival with them;
And together they all pray for us to the Pre-Eternal God.

Thank you everybody. I was really looking for something specific to Alaska (as in the icons), but these troparia are beautiful and help to remind me of the wider picture.
Who are the saints Nicholas and Alexis referred to in Herman's post?

Still looking for the reference to Hierarch St. Nicholas, but the other would be St. Alexis (Toth) of Wilkesbarre, who led the first exodus of Carpatho-Rusyn from the Unia back to Orthodoxy.
Herman the sort-of-Carpatho-Rusyn by adoption

An important saint indeed. And quite appropriate that I should learn about him when I am about to set off for the Carpatho-Rusyn homeland (or very close to it). Thank you.

Wasn't there a Nicholas who was a hierarch, or maybe a priest, in the Chicago area who later returned to Russia and was martyred in the Revolution. The tropar you quoted was the work of the OCA and so the New Martyrs would not have been formally recognized and so this Saint would have to be included in the list of "All Saints of North America".

Father David,
I may be mistaken, but I believe they are referring to +Nikolai (whose last name escapes me at the moment) of Zitcha (also referred to as, of South Canaan). He was the Serbian hierarch that reposed in exile in America in the late 50's or early 1960's, whose relics have since been translated back to Serbia.

You could be very correct - in that case the Nikolai would also be recognized in the Serbian Church and also known as St Nikolai (Velimirovic).

Just to confuse matters a bit more...I think the priest who returned to Russia for the Council of 1917-18 & then was martyred was Fr John Kochurov.
Can someone check this out?

According to the latest issue of the official magazine of the OCA, "The Orthodox Church", Father Raphael is correct.

Yes they do. I attend All Saints of Alaska Orthodox Church. Unfortunately I don't have the words exactly so I will try to get a copy to post sometime tomorrow.

Troparion to All Saints of Alaska- Tone 6:
Sing praises to our King, sing praises! Rejoices and give glory:
Christ has shone forth in Alaska, and nations receive the blessing.
The wonder-working love of Herman; the inspired labours of Innocent;
The martyrdom of Juvenaly and the mission of Jacob;
And Peter the Aleut's fearlessness and faith.
These are the northern lights, which call us heavenwards!
These are the clarions of the Cross! O Saints of God, pray that we may answer,
"We are ready, O God, we are ready," and that our souls will be saved.
