Hello!
I am looking for information regarding a tradition about Mount Sinai. In the cleft where Moses waited while God passed by (cf. Ex 33:21 ), there are some indentations on the wall. A tradition has it that these are the imprints of Moses' hands, head, and back; created at that time, the rock being softened in the presence of God's glory.
Has anyone seen a source that makes reference to this tradition? Unfortunately, I am abroad and have limited resources at my disposal. So far I have found only this, online:
The altar of the Church of the Holy Trinity is said to be built over the rock where God created the Tablets of the Law. Adjoining its northern wall, behind an iron fence, is the cleft of rock from where Moses beheld God’s glory. Many people believe that the marks inside the crevice are the imprints of Moses’ back, hands and head where he "shrank back into the rock while the glory of the Lord passed by".
