I am wondering about the recent down time on Monachos.net. I can't remember the exact wording of the note; but, it is something like server has exceeded band limit. If possible, could some in the know enlighten me about this please?
Thank you.

Rick

Hi Rick!
It was all my fault this time. I was writing a response to your thoughts about education the Church, in your yoga thread, and when I posted my message, everything shut down. I think I was way too verbose and the website ran out of space and suffocated and had a heart attack. I'll bet it was also overwhelmed with the wealth of wisdom in my post and just couldn't handle so much information all at once, sort of like a child asking you what sugar is made of, and you give him all the details of it's molecular structure... you'll stun the kid out of his senses.
That's what happened.
Please forgive me for knocking monachos out of orbit. I'll try not be so forceful and wise next time.
In Christ,
Mary.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for clearing that up for me! :D (I wish I knew how to do the ROTFL emoticon)
But, come to think of it, based on some of my posts of the same nature . . . there may be another reason as well?
Thanks for the laugh.
In Christ,
Rick

Dear Rick,
When in doubt, do what I always do--a google search!!!
Basically, this is what I found in my search. It is from Wikipedia:
A bandwidth cap, also known more precisely as a download cap or bit cap, limits the transfer of a specified amount of data (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data) over a period of time. The cap is commonly applied when a channel intended to be shared by many users becomes overloaded, or may be overloaded, by a few.

Dear Alice,
Good job--thank you. Maybe Mary did overload the system with the transfer of her post after all ;)
Thanks again.

Dear friends,
Just to clarify this situation: yes, at the end of both May and June the Monachos.net web site experienced down time due to bandwidth overages. I hope this situation has now been rectified, given that we have purchased additional bandwidth capacity for the web site, and have also taken measures to stop a massive 'bandwidth leak' caused by a spider from a Russian web site (yandex.ru) that scanned Monachos.net so often that it was consuming over 25 gigs of bandwidth per month.
We should now have more than enough room for all our bandwidth needs and desires.

Fr. Dcn Matthew,
My wife was standing beside me talking as my monitor refreshed the page it was on. She asked what just happened and I told her the page refreshes every 30 seconds or so. She said that is why the site runs out of bandwidth. Everytime my computer (every computer viewing the site) is refreshed it has to request the server for all the data all over again for every computer. She is more computer savy than I and asked me to ask you about it. Food for thought.
For some reason the forum is set to automatically resfresh every 30 seconds or is this just my machine? Thanks.
Paul

Dear Rick,
I cannot imagine what is causing this. The forum does not refresh automatically, unless you are sat on the 'Who's on-line' page which, as a page showing you current members on-line, does refresh automatically so that the list is up-to-date. But that is the only page on the forum that does so. I can certainly confirm that it does not do so on any other pages on any of the machines with which I regularly access it.
If you find that it is doing so on any page other than the 'Who's on-line' page, please PM me with details (e.g. page name, location, time, etc.) and I'll certainly have it looked into.

I also do not experience this problem on my PC.

Nope, you're right Fr. Dcn. It is only on the 'Whos on line' page this happens. I guess I just notice it more since I am on that page so much. Thank you
Rick,
I mean Paul :) Or maybe the truth comes out and he really is me. hummm. Or am I him?
