The Icon of the Mother of God, the "Multiplier of Wheat", was painted at the blessing of the Elder Ambrose (October 10) of the Visitation Optina wilderness monastery. St Ambrose, a great Russian ascetic of the nineteenth century, was ardent with a childlike faith towards the Mother of God. In particular, he revered all the Feastdays of the Mother of God, and on these days he redoubled his prayer. With the icon, "Multiplier of Wheat," St Ambrose blessed the Shamordino women's monastery established in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which he had founded not far from the Optina monastery.

On this icon, the Mother of God is depicted sitting upon the clouds, and Her hands are extended in blessing. Beneath her is a compressed field, and on it amidst the grass and flowers stand and lay sheaves of rye. Elder Ambrose himself decreed the day of celebration, October 15, and called the icon "Multiplier of Wheat", indicating by this, that the Most Holy Theotokos "is a Helper for people in their labors for the acquiring of their daily bread."
Before his blessed repose, St Ambrose ordered many copies of this icon and sent them to his spiritual children. For the Akathist to this icon, the Elder composed a particular response, "Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with You! Grant unto us unworthy ones the dew of Your grace and the showing forth of Your mercy!"

St Ambrose's burial took place on October 15, the Feastday of the icon. The first miracle from the holy icon was witnessed in 1891, when throughout Russia there was a famine because of crop failure. In the Kaluga district and on the fields of the Shamordino monastery, however, grain was produced. In 1892, already after the death of St Ambrose, his attendant John Cherepanov sent a copy of the icon to the Pyatnitsa women's monastery in Voronezh district. In this locale there was a threat of drought and famine, but soon after a Molieben was celebrated before the icon "The Multiplier of Wheat", rain fell and ended the drought.

Beautiful icon, Nina; thank you for that. Since I am on the old calendar, the feast day for this icon (Oct. 15) is yet to come.

I had a look at the OCA website and found the pages for each month listing the feast days related only to icons of the Mother of God. October certainly has a lot!

Wow thank you Jonathan!

I clicked on the link and found the icon and I could see it much better and there was also the option to magnify it since in the email I receive icons are tiny like the one above. I did not think of it before to check the OCA page since these lives and feasts of the saints come daily to my email and it is convenient for me. However when I could not see the icon very well (since it was the first time I saw it) I should have either googled it or looked at Orthodox sites. Thank you since now it much eaiser to see the details and admire the beauty of the icon. :)

And thank you, too, as I would never have Googled for this icon and found the OCA pages unless you hadn't first introduced the icon here.

p.s. I also saved the bigger version of the icon from OCA :-D

:) All thanksgiving goes to God, and also thanks to a friend who diligently sends out emails daily with lives of saints, icons' stories and spiritual nectar. If you, or other friends here, would like, I can PM you his email and you can request that he adds you also to his mailing list - a couple of friends from here did this when I said the same at the Orthodox Saints thread. I receive the lives of saints email daily and it is so convenient because sometime I am very busy but I know that always his emails are there daily to remind me for the next day's feasts. Although he sends all these according to the new calendar sometimes he notes the feast date with the Old Calendar. And sorry that I post these when they are emailed according to the new calendar because otherwise I would forget since the new emails have also beautiful things and I feel like a child in a candy store and I might forget to post something from the past emails.

This icon of the 'Mother of God the Multiplier of Wheat' I loved also for the fact that it reminded me of the dream of Joseph the Patriarch. :) But I could not see the details very clearly and I guess I forgot to copy it and magnify it in photoshop because sometime I rush so much. So when you posted the link I really saw all the beautiful details more clearly and it is indeed a beautiful icon with such precious story behind it.

Yes, all thanksgiving goes to God :)

I actually am already subscribed to a mailing list for daily saints, Bible readings and prayers, which is also on the new calendar (it gives me 13 days to get ready, I suppose!) It's called "Orthodox-Theo", maybe it's the same? I get around three emails a day from them on average, so it's rather overwhelming! Not that I'm complaining.

Also, I wonder if you know about this Menologion software:

http://www.orthodox.cn/software/menologion3_en.htm

It's something that can be installed on your computer and gives a daily list of Saints lives and Bible readings (New or Old Calendar). Well, the icons on it aren't as beautiful as the ones you receive, but I find it useful to know where I am - especially if I've not been reading the Bible as often as I should and have forgotten where we are on the lectionary.
