Friends,
the recent thread on Byzantine music interested this outsider. The music is beautiful beyond description. My tradition has nothing like that and I would like to know more. Do you all know 1) of good resources that explain the nature of the liturgical chant and 2) are there mp3s online of Byzantine/liturgical chants?

Thank you very much

Jacob

St. Anthony's Monastery Divine Liturgies Music Project (http://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/Index.html) This is an ongoing project with articles, sheet music, and recordings, oriented toward educating singers and choirs. Overall a good introduction to Byzantine Chant.

Byzantine Chant from Romania (http://www.resurse-ortodoxe.ro/muzica-bizantina/) This site has tons of MP3's, organized according to artist and album. My favorites are the group Byzantion and the monks of Sfante Manastire Putna (Putna monastery) but there's a lot of good stuff here.

Orthodox Two-Part Music (http://www.orthodoxtwopartmusic.org/) This is mainly a resource for churches who want to use Znamenny chant, with sheet music and recorded examples, but there is some Byzantine stuff here as well.

There are also a ton of great Byzantine chant videos on Youtube. Just do a search. There are several websites that convert Youtube videos to MP3's if you want to take the music with you.

Mr Ryan,
Thank you. This was specifically what I asked for. I've heard of the websites that convert Youtube videos to mp3, but my technology skills are slightly more advanced than your average caveman. Eventually I am going to learn how to do that.

Kind regards.
