My parish doesn't use these but we plan to start doing so as part of our gradual effort to serve a fuller form of the services. How do these work?
I know that each day of the week has troparia appointed in the Octoechos, which I have, and that these correspond to the liturgical observance of the various days of the week, (the Cross on Fridays, the Saints and Departed on Saturdays, the Resurrection on Sundays, and so forth). However, I also know that the calendar observances of the day are to be included as well. How does this work? Do these troparia come from the canon of the feast/Saint as they do for the Great Feasts of the Mother of God? What determines how many are used? Do the rules correspond to those for the stikhera at Vespers or are they different?
Fr John Whiteford's site is great for providing the Sunday ones but we have a blessing to observe the Saints of Britain so the troparia we shall be using will not always be the same as those in the typikon as provided by Fr John, and I would like to know how to put them together myself.
Any help would be very gratefully received.
In Christ,
Michael
