Anaphora, aloud or secret?

In my religious background (traditional roman catholic) the priest says the Eucharistic Prayer (in Latin) in secret, including the words of institution. Actually, to be exact, the priest says them whispering, so the average faithful in the pews cannot hear the words.
Question: Does this or similar practice ever existed in the Orthodox Church?
