View Full Version : Prosomoía/podoben melodies outside of the Greek language

This is a question for our brothers and sisters in the Byzantine tradition of liturgical chant, but in languages other than Greek:

How do prosomoía melodies work in the Churches of Romania, Serbia, Antioch, and Bulgaria? Are they the same melodies as in the Greek (were the hymns translated to conform to Greek meter), or do they change with the translation? Or are the melodies larely disregarded, as in the modern singing of the Churches of Russia and America?

Any input would be appreciated.

Asking your prayers,
Jeremiah

I'm not familiar with the actual practice in those areas, but hopefully it is the latter case. True Byzantine style is to recompose the melodies according to the formulas so that the text is clear and understandable. Hopefully someone will chime in.

Also, Podoben melodies are becoming a little more popular in the U.S. We just need more people to set them so that we can use them.
