St Simeon the New Theologian

  • No matter what happens to thee, accept everything as good, knowing that nothing happens without God.

Abba Dorotheus of Gaza

  • Believe that everything that happens to us, even the least thing, happens according to God's providence, and then without trouble thou wilt endure everything that comes to thee.

St Philaret of Moscow

  • In the adventures of life, the voice of Providence is heard, calling man to the Lord's path. The bitter, sent from the hand of the Heavenly Physician, is more favorable for the health of the soul than the sweet, offered by the world. And well being can be more dangerous than calamity, and calamity more saving than well being.
  • In every matter undertaken by thee, ask not first whether it will be pleasant, advantageous for thee, and praiseworthy before men, but first and foremost test whether it will be pleasing to God, and will not be contrary to His commandments.
  • Without God, not only a city, or a man's house is not built, but even the nest of a dove.

St Mark the Ascetic

  • When temptation comes upon thee, seek not whence and wherefore it came, but be concerned about enduring it thankfully, without sorrow and without remembering evil.
  • While remembering God, increase thy supplication, so that when thou forgettest Him, He would not forget thee.

St John Chrysostom

  • God does not leave men forever either in unhappiness, so that they would not grow weak, or in happiness, so that they would not become careless; but by divers means he arranges their salvation.
  • Take thou care of what is God's, and God will take care of what is thine.

St Isaac of Syria

  • Remember God at all times, and He will remember thee when thou fallest into calamity.

St Simeon the Studite

  • Acquire God as a friend for thyself, and thou wilt not require human help.

Holy, right believing Prince Alexander Nevsky

  • God is not in might, but in right.
